The Allegany COunty Department of Health functions as a full service health department, providing both pubilc health nursing and environmental health programs. ACDOH employes a staff of more than 50 individuals including administrative staff, public health nurses and registered nurses providing community health, traditional home health care or long-term health care and public health sanitarians. Other employees include a nurse pratitioner, three health educators, a speech pathologist, an accountant, children's service professionals, a quality assurance coordinator and clerical support staff.

Services Offered:
The Allegany COunty Department of Health provides public health nursing, traditional home health care or long-term health care. Education is provided through community outreach and grant programs. A number of clinics are held including Reproductive Health, Cervical Screening, Tuberculosis, Immunization, Adult Assessment, Well Child Visit, BP and Pregnancy Testing. Also provided are Environmental Health Services including restaraunt inspections, rabies surveillance and prevention, and sanitary surveys to name just a few services provided. The Department's Children's Services include Physically Handicapped Children which provides financial assistance for medical and orthodontic care for children who have or are suspected of having a disabling or serious chronic condition; and the Early Intervention Program providing screening and EI for infants under the age of three with high probablility of developmental delays or with developmental delays. The Allegany/Western Steuben Rural Health Network is a nonprofit association founded in 1994. The network is comprised of service providers and community leaders, and has the following mission: to improve the health and wellness of our community by collaboratively identifying unmet needs and gaps in services and serving as a catalyst for program development and improvement. The Network continues progress on the development of a Community Health Information Network (CHIN) which will coordinate systems of healthcare delivery in our servcie area. Initially, this will improve and advance our referral and assessment systems, benefiting both providers and consumers. The CHIN has the potential to affect other systems in the future. The Network also focuses on encouraging health adolescent behaviors, and collaboration in offering educational opportunities for providers and community members.

In August of 1995, the four hospitals in Chautauqua County provided the necessary seed money to establish the Chautauqua County Health Network. The hospitals recognized that working together on selected projects could have a positive effect on the quality of health care services available to patients. The newly founded network submitted grant applications for financial support to foundations in the community. The Gebbie Foundation, Ralph C. Sheldon Foundation, Northern Chautauqua Community Foundation and Chautauqua Region Community Foundation provided funding for initial expenses for the first two operating years (1996 and 1997). The Lake Shore Savings and Loan Association also awarded a community reinvestment grant to the CCHN in 1996. The four member hospitals again provided limited funding for 1996 but have not needed to contribute for any of the subsequent three years.
